Benefits of using Google Trends

What is Google Trends?

Google Trends is a tool from Google Labs where we can analyze and search what are the most searched keywords or sentences depending on the topic and filter it by year, region, age and so on so forth.

Google Trends Search is a powerful tool that many businesses, marketers, researchers, and many others can utilize to discover the ins and outs of trends that matters to them for every unique situation.

How does Google Trends work?

Since this tool was launched back in 2006, Google Trends allows you to go back to data of even 2004.

When you start using it for searching trends, the first thing you’ll notice is that Google Trends uses a score scale of 0 – 100, instead of search volumes.

To find search volumes for the search terms you desire, you need to use keyword tools to find that out: You can use the Keyword Planner from Google Ads, for example, to verify search volumes of trend search terms.

A score of 1 means the search terms lowest point of relative popularity and 100 would mean the opposite, the highest point of relative popularity. A score of 0 tells you that there isn’t enough data for a search term.

The benefit of the relative scoring system is that it enables you to search for many different trends, even unrelated ones, for comparison.

How to use Google Trends?

We will make a short and general review of how we can use Google Trends by putting and example and follow it to understand how we can get started using this tool.

We will locate ourselves in UK and we will search about 'Christmas Tree' and see what google trends is showing us:

We can see in this screenshot the trends around this term. I chose this word because is easy to see for beginner level how the machine is working and how is displaying this info.

In this graph we can see there are three peaks rated by almost 100 points, which is telling us during those dates, the popularity of the term really was high. By putting our cursor right in the peak you will be able to see exactly between which dates that rate is taking place, and as you can guess by this easy example, it is in the first week of December where everyone wants to get a tree for their home.

In this graph we can conclude for example when to sell these products.

Another question that may rise could be for example: I know when to sell my product, when to make marketing and advertising but I do not know where. I could do the 2 prevıous steps perfectly but being in the right time (as we are now) and at the right place (we do not know this) is so important for every opportunity.

İn this illustration we can see exactly where this term it's top trend which are: Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England. And this may be a bit generic but if we make click in England for example we will be able to see this:

Here we can see exactly in what cities we should make our sales, campaign target and so on so forth.

As you can see with this simple example, all the data is available to be checked but the real challenge for your IT company, retail company and more, is the knowledge and capacity to ask the correct questions and search the correct words so you can get the most proper and beneficial reports according to your goal.
